Google Instant: A Sea-Change for SEO?

The advent of Google Instant represents the biggest ever change to the functionality of the world’s most used search engine; in regards to SEO this sounds ominous, but whilst it is definitely bound to have some kind of effect on search engine optimization, is it really a sea-change for SEO?
